The Interesting History Of Roses

Roses originated in the wild – from the mountains of central Europe to the coasts of Northern Japan. The oldest garden rose is called the apothecary. Roses included in this class of old garden roses are the Albas, Centifolias, and Damasks. Damask roses are widely known for both their beauty and fragrant smell as well as their ability to grow at will. Damask roses only bloom in mid-summer but that hasn't decreased their popularity given how lovely they are. Even as far back as 35 AD is it believed that Virgil, the Roman writer, was talking about damask roses when he wrote about “the cultivation of roses and extolled the virtues of twice-bearing roses.” Amazingly, it wasn't until many centuries had passed until repeat flowers (like damask roses) arrived in the west from China. It was from here where the modern hybrid roses we know today, eventually developed.
